Sam’s Garden at Sunbury
This property was a one and a half acre cow paddock when we built the house ten years ago.
The main aims for the garden were to look reasonably attractive, provide wind breaks for the house, and provide privacy. The plan was for the garden to be a low maintenance garden.
The trees and shrubs planted were mostly natives including Bottlebrush, Tea-trees, Wattles, Gums, Hakeas, Melaleucas, and Grevilleas to encourage the honeyeaters and other birds. Some conifers, Pencil Pines and some Fruit Trees including apricot, plum, apples, nectarines and lemon were also planted.
There are some European plants but they have had difficulty getting established.
During the drought most of the trees survived, with a minimum of water provided to the younger ones.
A few plants have been added each year to introduce different colours.
